Chivalry To Death

December 2, 2005

It makes me sick to see the papers reporting youths wasting their lives to things like doing drugs and illegal street racing but this has got to be the cream of the crop right here. 18 year old Khairul Anuar Salim was attacked by two men last Saturday at a petrol station in Taman Muda, Cheras and eventually, two hours later, died. There’s lots of issues in this case that’s just plain wrong, like how he was attacked because of an act of chivalry but at the core of this is the obvious fact of why he died, and I’ll tell you why,

It’s because he didn’t have RM5,000 to give to the hospital as a deposit.

Read on.

"They wanted me to pay a deposit
of RM5,000, saying his injuries were serious. I was not carrying so
much money on me at that time," he said.

"They did not want to admit him until I paid the deposit, not even when I pointed out that this was an emergency."

Sallehuddean said he pleaded with the hospital staff but they would not budge.

He then returned to Khairul’s house in TTDI to pick up his grandmother.

"When I returned 30 minutes later, Khairul
was still not treated. I had an argument with the hospital staff and
when his condition worsened, they took him into the operation theatre.

"He was only treated an hour after he was taken to the hospital."

Sallehuddean said a doctor came out an hour later and told the family that Khairul could not be saved.

He claimed the hospital did not want to release his body until the bill was settled.

As if being the cause of his death wasn’t enough, this bloody inhumane hospital still wanted the bills to be settled to release the body! I wish there was a better way to say this but what type of chronic illness do the people running the damn hospital have? See this is why you should always note that in Malaysia, people care about money too much to consider your life and that anywhere you go you had better have a medical reserve in your pocket to avoid cases like this.

But while most bloggers are highlighting this, I was more disgusted by the attacking sequence. These two dissidents, on a Yamaha RXZ implies that they are most probably participants to the "Midnight Grand Prix" were making cat calls to Khairul’s friend endlessly which led to him confronting them in an act of chivalry using the English language. News reports no relation to this being the reason the assailants got ticked off but most of us can see that they are more insulted by the English than the fact that the actual message is to not disturb the person because she is a woman. Khairul was a student at international school and this caused he to lag in his Bahasa Malaysia, but whatever it is, just because he can’t speak malay that well is no reason at all to murder him. Eventually, the ticked duo got miffed, and one of them decided to react by attacking him with, what is believed to be, a sickle (a curvy knife most relate to a hook due to it’s similar appearance). The two then later hopped on their getaway ride and sped off leaving Khairul bleeding to death.

I’m not sure what relation this has, but news also reports that the two are believed to be Kelantanese. I tried, but what relation does this have really? I may not be Kelantanese but is it such a fact that Kelantanese are against western practices, including the very language they use? Or this fact could be a facial description, I’m unsure myself so I had better stray off that land. But why? It’s just too obvious they were offended by wrong means as before one of the attackers attacked Khairul, they warned him not to "show off", and this was in BM. This is one feature that I hate about the modern malay community, they always believe that Malays speaking English more than Malay would mean that you’re showing off, and in a way forgetting your roots, but where has this idiotic stereotype review come from? I cannot help but protest when it comes to this language debate as it is one’s choice to speak the language preferred and worst, Khairul is one of the many innocent Malays that can’t even speak BM due to his years in international schooling so really, he had no choice!

If not presuming one can’t speak BM isn’t a good enough reason, I still believe that anyone can speak whatever language they desire. You’re still a Malay no matter what language you speak, period! No need to get into the issue of roots here, and there’s definetly no need to take it so personally as to murdering someone.

But at the end of the day, facing the music is inevitable and politics still rule even the medical society, and the blame gets put on the obvious element which is the private hospital. I hope they won’t forget who slashed Khairul in the first place and go after the hospital in full throttle, because the real killers are out there.

Ampang Jaya CID chief Deputy Superintendent Radin Roslan Radin
Shuadi said they are still studying the tape from the closed-circuit
cameras at the petrol station to get a better description of the
suspects.

Radin urged witnesses to come forward to help police in the
investigations. Those with information can contact the Ampang Jaya
